Softwood is a less dense wood which typically burns faster than hardwood, with more flame but can spark. Therefore we would suggest it is not suitable for open fires but for wood burners it makes an economical choice compared to hardwood. Typically softwood is used for kindling but also works well when mixed with hardwood to help freshen up a slow burning fire.
